4th June 2017: A very important day here at the EHCC as Canterbury HC, CSP Krylatskoye, Hermes – Monkstown HC and C.H. SPV Complutense were in action to decide who would play in the 5/6 playoff on Monday. 

Canterbury HC  3 – 1   CSP Krylatskoye

A solid performance in the first half from both teams, as both tested eachother.  BALSDON opened the scoring for Cantrbury with a PC direct strike in the 25th minute. The score was 1-0 in favour of Canterbury in the first half.

Russia equalised with a fantastic diving cross from KHALMURATOVA in the 39th minute. Some excellent play from both teams with Russia’s SADOVAIA making some testing runs at the Canterbury defence.

In the 49th minute Canterbuy won a corner, the ball was saved off the line, but by a Russian foot and BALSDON ably scored the penalty stroke, Canterbury led 2-1.

Immediately after that CSP Krylatskoye earned a PC, the initial strike was saved and the ensuing rebound strike was deemed dangerous. The score remained 2-1.

A perfect deflection from Canterbury’s GRIGGS in the 52nd minute ensured their victory and a chance to play for 5/6 on Monday.

Speaking to Canterbury’s after the game she said they were “thrilled to be honest and I couldn’t be prouder of the girls. We knew our first game here would be tough, but in this second game we played our socks off. “ Asking her about the start of the game she agreed thatCSP Krylatskoye had  Held off in their press, as they had done in their earlier game. They are a really quick side as are we so we knew it would be a close match up, thankfully  fitness prevailed. She added that the 3rd goal was critical as finished off the game. They are now looking forward to their final game and indeed a bit of a lie-in tomorrow!

Hermes – Monkstown HC  1 – 4  C.H. SPV Complutense

The second game started with the perfect start for Complutense as GARCIA  slotted home a PC in the 3rd minute. They had the better of the first quarter as they outpaced Hermes-Monkstown. Just before the break captain RIERA ZUZUARREGUI doubled Complutense’s score 0-2 with a powerful drag flick.
CURRAN  make some excellent runs down the left channel for Hermes-Monkstown as Complutense sat back in a in a half press, happy to soak up the pressure. Irish international  O FLANNIGAN  rally started making her presence felt in the midfield during the second quarter and she earned a PC for ‘town in the 21st minute, however the initial strike was saved and then ‘town fouled.  The game opened up towards the end of the first half with both teams having chances, but the score remained 2-0 in favour of the Spaniards.

9 minutes into the second half Hermes-Monkstown O FLANNAGAN’s  dummy flick then strike found the back of the net, the score now a close 2-1. In the 41st minute went again again via another well worked strike from RIERA ZUZUARREGUI, bringing the score to 3-1.

In the final quarter Hermes-Monkstown opted for a powerplay, but to no avail as Complutense continued to press and absorb the attacks from ‘town including two more penalty corners.
