The EuroHockey Indoor Championships started today in Minsk with the defending Champions setting out their intentions very early with a comprehensive  9-0 win over Poland.

Netherlands v Poland 9-0

Lieke HULSEN opened the scoring for The Netherlands in the second minute and ended the game with a hat-trick! The half-time score was already 6-0 so unlikely that Poland would make a comeback. Ireen van den ASSEM added a 7th from a powerful PC and ended any glimmer of a comeback from Poland. The game ended 9-0 to The Netherlands.

Czech v Belgium 5-0

Game 2 saw Belgium face Czech Republic. Adela BIZOVA was on target from a PC awarded in the 10th minute and that’s how the score remained 1-0 at the half. Adela BIZOVA   was also on target as she slapped it home from close range in the 21st minute, doubling Czech’s scoreline. Jindriska REICHLOVA  stretched the Czech lead in the  24th minute. Belgian earned a stroke but Delforge put it wide. From then on Czech dominated the game and pushed forward to finish 5-0.

Austria v Ukraine 6-1 

In the 3rd game, a very tight first half saw Ukraine being more decisive in taking their chances with a 3-0 lead. However in the second half Ukraine stamped their dominance on the game and went ahead 4,5,and 6 to nil in a 8 minute spell. Austria scored a consolation goal in the 36th minute via  Corinna ZERBS.

 Germany v Belarus 3-4 

In the last game of the first session the home team, with the packed hall got underway with high hopes for the Belarus Head Coach, Dutchman Herman Kruis. Much to the delight of the crowd  Ryta BATURA put the hosts ahead in the first minute! Germany equalised via a sweet corner routine from  Julia MEFFERT, however the hosts went ahead again just before the half. Belarus pushed hard against a strong German defence and stretched their lead to 4-1, as the German’s played a power-play. Two PC’s and the scoreline was 2-4 into the last 2 minutes, but Belarus held out for a historic win against Germany.

Poland v Belgium 5-1 

In their second game of the day, Belgium struggled against Poland, who started to look more comfortable here in Minsk. Poland were ahead 2-0 at the half and added 2 more to their tally, never under any real pressure from the young Belgian side. The final score of 5-1 was a fair reflection of the game.

 Czech Republic v The Netherlands 1 -9 

With both teams on 3 points after the first game, another win would more than likely ensure a semi-final place for either team so the stakes were very high. The Dutch went ahead first via  Lieke HULSEN once again on target. In spite of a cracking performance from the Czech Goalkeeper Barbora  CECHAKOVA  the Dutch women dominated both halves and ended the game

Austria v Germany 0-2 

In the penultimate game of the Day 1 here at the EuroHockey Indoor Championships in Minsk, it was all to play for as both Austria and Germany needed to get points on the board. In what transpired as a very even first half with Austria’s Jasmin ANDERLE making a critical save in the 16th minute from a PC strike by Germany and another in the 19th minute to keep the score at 0-0 at half-time. In the second half Germany pressed hard and won a corner, xx breaking the deadlock and putting Germany on the scoreboard 0-1. Shortly afterwards Germany doubled the score via Roda MÜLLER-WIELAND. Austria opted for a power-play and Buchta had a great chance which just went wide. The score remained 2-0 to Germany

Belarus v Ukraine 

In the final game of the day the hosts took on their neighbours Ukraine in a tough and even game. Both teams had chances but neither could break the deadlock. In the 24th minute Nastassia SYRAYEZHKA  struck home at close range to put the hosts ahead. Belarus earned a PC in the 26th minute but the Ukraine defence held firm with keeper STEPANCHENKO making a great save! in the 32nd minute Belarus earned another corner, the shot going high over the bar. In the 35th minute Ukraine earned a PC and the strike by Yevheniya KERNOZ hit a defender on the line, converting the PC to a stroke. KERNOZ took it and scored, levelling the game for the final quarter. In the final 2 minutes of the game Belarus extended their lead from a PC and then Yuliya KURHANSKAYA  scored a stunning individual goal, a powerful strike on the run, which ended the game 3-1 in favour of the hosts. The hosts are placed top of Pool B going into Day 2.
