2nd June 2017: The EHCC got underway in HC ‘s Hertogenbosch, with 4 knock out games, plenty of action and goals galore! The format of the EHCC means that each game is a knock-out so there is no time for teams to pace themselves into this event, winner takes all!

Match 1  – Surbiton HC  2 – 1(0-0)  C.H. SPV Complutense

Surbiton dominated the opening game of the EHCC, but neither team was able to score in the first half. Complutense’s defence was under pressure, but the score remained 0-0 at the half. In the second half the game opened up with EVANS opening the scoring for Canterbury in the 33rd minute. Complutense replied 3 minutes later from GARCIA. A close quarter WEBB goal in the 50th minute sealed the game for Surbiton, although Complutense did have a pc in the dying seconds that was well defended by Surbiton. The final score was 2-1.

Match 2 UHC Hamburg 5 – 0 (2-0) Canterbury HC

UHC Hamburg dominated their opening game of the EHCC here in HC ‘s Hertogenbosch with goals coming from STAPENHORST and WILDE in the opening 10 minutes. WILDE added another just after the break and Canterbury failed to get any kind of decent possession. UHC continued to dominate MAYEN adding a 4th and then MÄVERS a 5th in the final minute of the game.

Match 3 CSP Krylatskoye 0 – 8 (0-1) AH&BC Amsterdam

Russian’s defended well, making it hard for Amsterdam to dominate in the first half. Indeed they kept the score to 0-1. However as the game went on Amsterdam showed their class with MÜLLER as tenacious as ever from corners totalled 2 goals and VEGA adding two field goals. VERSCHOOR was also on form adding two goals, van MALE added one as did BENNINGA. Speaking to VERSCHOOR after the game she said they were ‘happy to get the win, but the first half was difficult as the Russian’s defended well”

HC ‘s Hertogenbosch  (3-0) Hermes-Monsktown

Den Bosch had the better start of the game, captain Maartje Paumen taking her two PC’s in her usual decisive style in the 5th and 14th minute. MATLA added a field goal just before the half. Town’s keeper MURPHY stood tall in the dying moments of the first half to deny Paumen a first half hat-trick.

The second half started with a early goal from “Den Bosch” a break from the re-start caught ‘Town’s’ defence not quite set. Town earned a PC in the 48th minute, but it was padded away by Den Bosch’s keeper KONING. MATLA added another, as did van der HOEK, but the goal of the day was a perfectly placed deflection from SANDERS in the 57th minute, the strike coming from Paumen. Den Bosch headed into the final quarter a well deserved 6-0 ahead. A PC in the 50th minute was well defended by Hermes-Monkstown’s keeper as Paumen struck down the barrel. Den Bosch looked dangerous on every break and were rewarded with stunning deflected shot into the D, scored by OMRANI. van den ASSEM struck a corner in the 55th minute, making it 8-0 to the home side. In the last moments VERBRUGGEN made it 9-0.  Speaking to Hermes-Monkstown’s head coach Rudi Wortmann after the game he said that he would be taking the positives from the game, “Every player just stepped up today, we have a very inexperienced keeper and honestly the first two goals just went it, but after that she got used to the pace of the game and defended about 6 more. Den Bosch are such a good team, we need 4/5 of these high level games per year in Ireland as it is only then that you get better.” Speaking about the rest of the tournament he was very optimistic about his team’s chances “We are aiming for 5th place, we are good enough for 5th place”
