In front of 400 children from Tina Bachmann’s (Uhlenhorst’s coach) school, Hoeterschule,  where she is normally the teacher , the hosts HTC Uhlenhorst got off to a perfect start with an 11-5 win over East Grinstead.

HTC Uhlenhorst v East Grinstead:

A fascinating game where HERZBRUCH put the hosts ahead in the 5th minute. NITSCHKE pushed the score to 2-0. East Grinstead were awarded a corner in the 13th minute but a mistrap kept the score 2-0. HTC were awarded their first corner and some brave defending from EG was deemed illegal and HTC Captain  STRALKOWSKI stood up to take the stroke. Rarely missing from the flick spot for his club or country, his powerful flick brought the score to 3-0. KIRKHAM from EG showed his quality in the 19th minute and narrowed the scoreline to 3-1. But a quality goal from KEUSGEN and the half-time score was 4-1 at half time. HTC went with a surprising powerplay in the 33rd minute for the rest of the game. The scoreline at the time was 8-3, and with this 5 goal cushion they opted to take their keeper off and this proved successful as they dominated the play for much of the second half, the extra man proving vital in attack, and they didn’t conceed any corners in this time. As Captain Thilo Stralkowski explained in his post match interview, this cushion meant they could try the power play and were pleased with the result! Next up for them is Complutense and an opponent they don’t know as well as EG.

Matt Jones, Manager East Grinstead said after the game “It was always going to be a tough start against a dominant host. We have a number of newcomers in the squad. Our defense was nowhere near where it is needed to be but we know we can score goals. It’s 12 months since we played at this level of competition. On a positive note we scored 5 against a very slick German side, and it was a valuable experience for this group.” On lessons learned and going forward in the competition he said  “We know we can score against any opposition, we must improve our reaction to turnover, improve our defense and if we do all of that we can have a positive outcome to this weekend.”
