The European Hockey Federation is committed to ensuring that all members receive access to the same opportunities. #EquallyAmazing aims to promote gender balance throughout European Hockey. Different stories from members of the hockey family are highlighted; illustrating the important role that both men and women have in strengthening the sport.
We heard from some top umpires on how gender equality has helped them.
Laurine Delforge, a player and international umpire, made history when she became the first female umpire to be appointed to the European Hockey League (EHL) saying she was “proud when the EHF dared to make the first move and appoint a female umpire for a men’s game”.
Laurine sees no difference in her role as a female umpire at the highest level, saying “We are all doing the same role, we are all passionate, and we are all facing the same challenges.” For her, hockey is a gender-equal sport and we need to continue to push that message.
Similarly, international umpire Jamie Hooper is passionate about the aims of #EquallyAmazing. When asked to name one of his biggest influences, he cites president Marijke Fleuren saying she “passionately champions women, champions young people and she’s been a real inspiration”. Jamie believes that #EquallyAmazing’s approach for achieving gender balance is innovative, stating that he’s really excited to see the outcomes.
His challenge to everyone: “think about how [you] can be a positive ally to everyone, of all genders”.
The #EquallyAmazing campaign is supported by both the International Hockey Federation (FIH) and the European Hockey Federation (EHF) in an effort to ensure that everyone has access to the same opportunities – from the pitch to the boardroom.
