EHF announces its Umpires for Nations (U4N) & Umpires for Europe (U4E) selection decision

Posted On 13/10/2020

Inez Cooper, Chair Officials Committee said

” We are delighted to see such a high quality of applications from National Associations and to see such a high number of applications following the recent changes. This has resulted in being over-subscribed again this year.

Over 30 National Associations have been represented through the umpire education programme over the past decade. The total number across both programmes is 36 (18 for U4N and 18 for U4E). Following the selection process by the EHF Umpire Education Group, we are delighted to announce the participants who have been chosen to take part in the U4E and U4N programmes in 2021. We cannot increase any further owing to the number of matches in the Breda Tournament and giving umpires a good number of matches.

We spent a considerable amount of time deciding how best to allocate the available places. Ultimately, with 17 umpires secured places on the 2021 programme owing to the cancellation this year due to COVID-19, the decision process was dependant on the combination of three criteria areas 1) Answers to the questions in the nomination, 2) allowing a mix of nations represented, and 3) remaining true to the Equally Amazing Gender Balance Charter for Europe, maximising where the possible, gender balance.

We are encouraged by such a fantastic response and urge National Associations to continue to nominate young umpires in future years, they are crucial to our game. U4E and U4N programmes remain an ideal pathway into UDP selection which is carried out during each year by the EHF Officials Committee.

We hope all umpires have a great experience on the U4E & U4N programmes. For those who may be disappointed at missing out on selection this year, there will be another opportunity next year!

We wish to remind National Associations that, U4E and U4N are 1-year programmes, there is though no restriction on the number of years for which umpires can apply to and be part of the EHF Umpiring pathway.”
