Match 5: Finland v Cyprus 3-1  

On the third day of the Men’s EuroHockey Championship IV only one match took place as host country Finland faced Cyprus in what turned out to be a very exciting match. From start to finish it was one of the most fast-paced matches in the tournament so far. The match started out very even until Finland took the lead at 13’ minutes when Laiho Sami scored from a penalty corner.

Meski Tony widened Finland’s lead to 2-0 from another penalty corner 5-minutes into the second quarter. Second-quarter also saw the first card of the match given out to Cyprus’ Stylianou Constantinos at 25’ minutes. Three more green cards, all of which to Finland, were given during the third quarter. Määttänen Santeri was given a green card at 37’ minutes, Laiho Sami at 40’ minutes and Danhieux Willem at 42’ minutes. For a moment Finland was down by two men at the same time.

Being man down did not slow Finland down as Vesakoski Olli scored right after at 43’ minutes widening Finland’s lead to 3-0. Cyprus hyped themselves up during the last break of the match and came back with Weare Nicholas James scoring from a penalty corner at 50’ minutes. For the last 10 minutes of the game the pace picked up again. Cyprus’ Stylianou Constantinos was given a yellow card towards the end of the fourth quarter at 56’ minutes, which meant Cyprus playing the last minutes man down. No more goals were scored and the match ended in Finland’s 3-1 win.
