15th July 2018, Santander: In the women’s event Pool B got the tournament underway here in Santander. England leads the pool overnight with a solid 4-0 win over Belarus.  In Pool A, the current Champions, The Netherlands have set down a marker with an emphatic 4-0 win over the hosts, to top Pool A and set up a top of the table clash v Belgium on Tuesday.

Match 1: Germany 2 v Ireland 1

A highly competitive game in which both sides had chances to take the points. In the end, it was the German’s strength from their penalty corners that was the difference between the teams.

Ireland went ahead via and O BRIEN corner. Germany brought the game to 2-1 via their captain KURZ in the 20th and then again another strike in the 28th minute.

The score remained 2-1 to the German’s despite pressure from the Irish in the final minutes of the game.

Match 2: England 4 v Belarus 0

A strong performance from England saw them beat the newly promoted Belarus 4-0 in a solid show from the English girls. GREENWOOD opened for England, a scramble in front of goal. The second from BOURNE left none in doubt as she smashed her effort home from a reverse shot. 2-0 at halftime and Belarus were struggling to compete apart from some excellent solo runs from their captain LAPITSKAYA. England finished 4-0 ahead, another from GREENWOOD, textbook stuff as the forwards moved the ball into a perfect position for her, leaving the Belarus keeper exposed.

Pool A:

Match 3: Belgium 4 v France 1

The afternoon session got underway as Belgium took on France. France took the lead via ISORÉ with the best chance of the first quarter. However, Belgium worked hard to get back into the game and scored 3 in the 33rd, 34th and 36th minute to bring the score to 3-1. Belgium was then on top of the game and forced another goal from BALLENGHIEN (her second of the game), final score 4-1.

Match 4: Netherlands v Spain

Current Champions, The Netherlands laid down the gauntlet with an emphatic win over hosts Spain. A 4-0 scoreline was a fair result from a very attacking side who took their chances and indeed many more went begging!
