So why are the U18 Championships so important? The U18 Championships are where the rising stars of Europe get to pit their wits against the best teams at their age. With 3 levels of competition and the prospect of promotion and relegation, players learn the pressure of a tournament situation, having to pick themselves up and go again if game 1 doesn’t work well. It is not possible for coaches to replicate this kind of ‘bubble’ at other friendly events, so here is where the players get their chance to shine! It’s not that long since the likes of Tom Boon, Seve van Ass and Aisling D’Hooghe were the future stars.

Angus Kirkland, Director General of the EHF said “For some of these players, this U18 Championship will be the pinnacle of their hockey careers, some will go on to senior representation, many will go on to enjoy brilliant club hockey, social hockey, coach, umpire and administer hockey. We in the EHF believe that giving these players the platform of a European Championships is an essential part of our calendar. We are really delighted that so many of the games will be streamed live on our OTT platform, www.eurohockeytv.org. We are looking forward to delivering top class events to allow these players to play at their best!”
