In today’s #FridayFocus we take a look at last month’s High Performance Indoor Coaching Course, held alongside the FIH Indoor World Cup in Berlin.
The course, held by FIH Hockey Academy and the European Hockey Federation Top Coaches Programme (TCP), hosted 36 candidates (from 18 nations across 5 continents; 16 FIH Candidates & 20 EHF TCP Candidates).
In terms of gender balance, this was the 1st 50/50 Coach Educator team, and there were 8 women candidates (22%) and 28 men candidates (78%). The week also saw a joint ‘Women into Coaching’ and ‘Athlete Transition Programme’ (ATP) initiative, supporting a female hockey player in career transition from player to coach. Kathryn Williams (CAN) was selected out of many competitive applicants from around the world.
Many thanks to Andre Oliveira, FIH Academy and Education Manager for this report.
The candidates also heard from Nicole Arrold (AUS), FIH Academy Educator Olympian and former Hockeyroos Assistant Coach, who engaged them in discussion about HP programmes, Indoor and Outdoor HP pathway, player selection and development. Bernardo Fernandes (POR), FIH Academy Educator, Head Coach of Royal Victory Antwerpen and of Portugal’s Indoor National Team discussed match analysis and observating best practices in Indoor Hockey. Finally, Ageeth Boomgaardt (NED), Guest Educator & former Head Coach Belgium shared her knowledge and experience about the role and responsibilities of the coach.
