As we continue our countdown to the final EHCC we were delighted to chat with Olympic Gold Medalist and long term Surbiton player, Georgie Twigg.
Last year Surbiton hosted this event, was this fun? “We loved hosting it last year and even though the results didn’t go our way we are really proud of what the club put on and how the event went as a whole.”
How has her life changed since international retirement “Life has obviously changed a lot since retiring! I’m now a qualified solicitor but I’m still really enjoying playing top club hockey alongside that.”
Georgie recently got engaged to fellow ex-GB International Iain Lewers, we wondered if she would consider playing the morning of the wedding? “After my recent knock to the face, I certainly won’t be playing any hockey too close to the wedding!”
Surbiton faces An der Alster in their first game at the EHCC had she played them before? “No, we’ve never played them but we know they will be a strong team and it will be a tough match. I think Anne Schroder will be one of their key players and who we will need to keep a close eye on. In terms of preparing for, we will mainly focus on our game and what we need to do but I’m sure our coaches will also have tried to get footage of them to help to prepare us for what to expect.”
How important does Georgie think it is for women to watch women’s sport? “It’s so important to women’s sport for us to be able to get our sport out there and for people to be watching it. There is an ever-increasing interest in women’s sport and the more we can do to showcase women’s sport and get people watching it the better.”
