15th May 2018: With just 2 days before we start the EHCC, meet Georgie Twigg, Gold Olympian and taliswoman for Surbiton HC.
EHF: So, Georgie, this is the first time the EHCC in it’s current format will be held in England, how important is it to have this event in this World Cup year?
Georgie: “It’s very important for our sport to be hosting these big events in England to keep building on the interest in hockey. It’s fantastic that we are hosting the World Cup and I think the EHCC will really get everyone excited in the build up towards it.”
EHF: You’ve played in a few EHCC”s now – what are your learnings from the past ones?
Georgie: “We’ve learnt how important it is to be playing at the level we know we can do right from the start. The first game is so important and you don’t have time to ease into the tournament.”
EHF: Surbiton are the hosts, is that extra pressure for you as a team or are you delighted to be hosting?
Georgie: “We are very proud and so excited to be hosting the EHCC at Surbiton for the first time. I think having that home crowd behind us will give us an extra boost and I know everyone is really looking forward to it.”
EHF: You have just lifted the English League Title for the 5th year in a row, how vital will that winning feeling be in your first game v Club de Campo?
Georgie: “Yes it will be important that we build on our successes in the English League into the EHCC. We know how tough the competition will be and how crucial it will be to take that positive momentum forward.”
EHF: Surbiton has added a number of ‘side’ events, how vital do you think it is to take the opportunity to showcase parahockey ID and Hockey for heroes at these European events?
Georgie: “It’s absolutely brilliant that there are a number of other events going on at the same time as our competition. Having the U14 EHCC is fantastic as the junior section is such a big part of our club and then being able to showcase Parahockey and Hockey for Heroes is just amazing. They show how powerful hockey can be with demonstrating that anyone can play our sport and how it can be used to raise money for incredible causes.”
EHF: All the games will be live streamed, with the ‘voice of hockey’ Nick Irvine doing the commentary, his co-commentator is none other than Maddie Hinch, good news?
Georgie: “It’s great news that all the games will be live streamed with two fantastic commentators. We want to make hockey as easily accessible as possible and therefore if people can’t make it in person at least they are able to watch it online.”
Playlist: Always Avicii pre-game.
Prematch meal: Scrambled eggs, avocado and toast.
Prematch routine: We always play music in our changing rooms at Surbiton and it’s a fairly relaxed atmosphere which is good pre-match. I don’t have anything specific out of the ordinary!
Huge thanks to Georgie, our Surbiton Ambassador. You can watch their game live here
All games will be streamed via www.eurohockeytv.org soon.
