EuroHockey U18 Championship – final rankings

Boys EuroHockey U18 Championship II-B (Swansea, Wales)



The Czech Republic will compete in the top tier of the EuroHockey Championships for just the second time after they won a brilliant boys II-B final against Italy 4-3 in Swansea.



Matyáš Hána scored a hat trick of far from typical corners in the final with two of them coming in the last eight minutes for a famous success, putting them back in the A division in 2025, something they only did before in 2016.



He got his first in the fifth minute with a ripper of a flick. Štepan Šmid set up the next with a powerful slap into the circle which fell to Jonáš Lupač who peeled away and then spun to flick into the top corner.&nbsp;



The response was immediate, Gabriel Bocca producing a thunderbolt on his reverse into the top corner to cut the gap to 2-1. Valerio Iossa levelled it at 2-2 from a corner in the 41st minute, setting up a thrilling closing quarter.



It remained that way into the last nine minutes where Šmid won a corner and while the routine was not clean, it was worked to Hána who whipped it in. And he got another from another corner, one in which he had to wriggle out of trouble and then find another great finish.



Leonardo Arzenton dragged one back with 75 seconds to go but there was not time for one last chance and the Czechs were able to celebrate wildly.



Earlier in the day, Switzerland equalled their best ever performance with a third place finish as they edged out Wales 2-1.&nbsp;



Alex Starling had the hosts in front in the second quarter but Steven Meuwsen levelled within two minutes and the eventual winner arrived in the 36th minute from tournament top scorer Mattia Ribaudo.&nbsp;



The Swiss survived three yellow cards in the second half, ending the game with nine players, but held on to their precious lead and a bronze medal.



In Pool C, Lithuania pinned down fifth place with a 6-2 success against Slovakia, the Slovaks taking some solace from their first goals of the competition.



Indeed, Peter Preverčik’s double canceled out Povilas Sinkevičius’s double to make it 2-2 with 20 minutes to go. Lithuania, though, pulled away after that with Sinkevičius completing his hat trick in their late rally.

Hána sends Czech up to top tier with glorious hat trick

Boys EuroHockey Championship (Krefeld, Germany)



Germany won the boys EuroHockey U18 Championship for the fourth time in five editions, toasting their first ever hosting of the event in style with a cracking 3-2 final win over Belgium.



They had the guile to deny the Belgians a second title. Lukas Kossel’s seventh goal of the tournament in the 16th minute – a low bullet of a drag-flick – gave Germany a great start.



Charlie Langendries, another of the tournament’s leading goal-getters, netted his eighth in the second quarter for 1-1 from the penalty spot when Larry Fauchey was fouled.



Ben Hasbach joined him on the same mark so they would share the top scorer honours when he found the net in the 41st minute. He beautifully used his first touch from a ball into the circle to locate the space and cracked home a backhand shot for 2-1.&nbsp;



And the vital third goal came with seven minutes left when a long ball found Germany with an overload in the Belgian circle. They bided their time to work the ball to Titus Wex who had the clearest opening and he fired into the backboard.



Fauchey close the gap once more with less than three minutes left but Germany played the closing seconds well to win the competition for a fifth time overall and spark serious celebrations in the capacity crowd.



German captain Benedikt Geyer summed up the immediate reactions: “I am really happy; I don’t know what to say! Emotions are all coming right now and it feels incredible; European champions – an amazing feeling.&nbsp;



“Belgium are an amazing team; it was of course not like yesterday [the 8-6 semi-final against Spain] with as many goals. In the last few minutes, a few nerves at the end but we held on to the end.”



In the bronze match, Peppe Veen gave the Netherlands the perfect start with a goal in the first minute with a lovely deflection. But close-range efforts from Josep Martin and Javier Hernandez, showing hunger amid tight spaces, saw Spain swap the lead before half-time to create a 2-1 advantage.



Jan van ’t Land produced some outstanding juggling to equalise at 2-2 but Spain were ahead once more in the third quarter via Alex Duran who dragged in.



The Dutch fought back to make the game level for the third time with van ’t Land scoring from a near impossible angle with 1.3 seconds left before the third interval.



And Isaac Jozefzoon got on the end of a right wing baseline cross to get the game defining goal to make it 4-3.



England just about took fifth place ahead of Scotland despite a huge comeback from the Scots. Jake Edwards and Jack Webb had England in a 2-0 lead in the first 12 minutes.



Scotland missed a stroke in the second half but were back in it when Sam Hunt got one back and then Johnny Bradley levelled with less than 10 seconds left for 2-2. England, however, won the shoot-out 2-1 to leave Scotland in sixth overall.



Ireland finished their tournament in seventh place with a 2-1 win over Austria, ending their campaign with three victories out of six games. All the goals were in the first quarter with Max Caulwell and Ben Pasley outdoing an Adrian Fink strike.

Germany delight home crowd to win fourth U18 boys title in last five editions

Girls EuroHockey U18 Championship (Krefeld, Germany)



Germany went the distance to retain the girls EuroHockey U18 Championship title, denying Belgium a first title after a pulsating final in Krefeld.



The hosts held their nerve in a shoot-out with Julia Boehringer, Giulia Funkel and Friederike Heusgen scoring in the first three rounds while Rebecca Götz saved twice to build a 3-1 lead.&nbsp;



Belgian did score in round four but a subsequent miss for each side had the German hosts celebrating in front of their large home crowd.



German captain Taja Gans hailed her team’s incredible effort: “It’s an amazing feeling. We achieved everything we dreamt of; we put in so much work and I think we deserve it. I am so proud of everyone and we are such a great team. We run and fight for each other and that’s what made us win!”



Like the group stages, normal time saw the sides proving completely inseparable, ending as it did a couple of days before at 0-0.



The first quarter saw Germany making all the play and chances but Belgium were resolute in defence and gave nothing up easily. After that barracking, they enjoyed greater control in the second quarter with Louise Dewaet causing problems.&nbsp;



Klara Batschko did brilliantly to make a double save in the aftermath of Lena Keller’s drag-flick, leaving it 0-0 into half-time.



Marie Gelders, meanwhile, had to make a trio of stops from a German corner and she stuck out a brilliant foot to stop Carolin Seidel’s rasping backhand shot. The hosts continued to have the edge but could not break through while Dewaet and Lisl Denef’s raids meant there was always a threat.



The final quarter followed a similar pattern with Germany making all the moves forward with Belgian’s central defence producing a string of great tackles. The closest chance of the came with 25 seconds remaining when Seidel’s first time shot from a great position bounced off her stick and just wide of the post.



That led to the shoot-out where Germany excellent, crowning a memorable tournament.



Earlier, Spain claimed bronze as they reversed their group stage result against England to win 1-0. They had the edge in chances with English goalkeepers Isabel Field and Molly Smith – trading places each quarter – the busier with Teresa Saenz, Natalia Vilanova and Marta Alcaraz testing the defence.



In reply, England’a main openings came either side of half-time from corners which were well shut down. Alcaraz’s deflection was brilliantly dealt with by Field but the deadlock was eventually broken from a corner, a powerful sweep from Marta Armenteras.



She almost repeated the trick early in the final quarter but Smith got a long boot out to it to prevent a second. England threw everything forward in the closing phases but Spain held on to win a medal for a fourth time in this competition, adding to two earlier bronzes and the 2021 silver.



Scotland took seventh place when they defeated Ireland 2-0 with goals from Lucy McMillan and Cara Falconer in the second and third quarters, respectively.

Germany shoot their way to girls EuroHockey U18 retention

Boys EuroHockey U18 Championship II-A (Alanya, Türkiye)



France completed a perfect tournament with a 7-0 win over Croatia, formally getting what they needed to confirm their place after a dominant week in Alanya.



Indeed, they scored 65 times across five matches and did not concede once and their coach Matthias Dierckens was delighted with the performance.



“We are very pleased to win this tournament after a very good overall performance through all our matches,” he said.&nbsp;



“Winning all the games with big margins, conceding absolutely no goals is a statement. We proved we deserved totally to play in the A Division. In two years, we will have both our girls and boys teams playing for the EuroHockey Championship I. We’re already looking forward to it.”



Needing just to avoid a heavy defeat, the French showed no complacency as captain Arthur Plauche put them 1-0 up in the fourth minute.

Arthur Morcrette – who was the tournament top scorer with 13 – added two more in the first half along with one from Malo Martinache for a 4-0 lead. Second half efforts from Hugo Dolou, Loïc Berlinghof and Plauche ended the tournament in style.



Hosts Türkiye finished second with a brilliant 7-3 win over Ukraine thanks to four goals from Mehmet Aydin. His first two came in the first quarter to build a 2-1 lead which was advanced to 3-2 at half-time.&nbsp;



They made their big move in the second half with the next four goals to run out winners with something to spare. Ukraine’s Oleksandr Boiko was named player of the tournament.



Both nations will play in EuroHockey Championship II in 2025.



Bulgaria, meanwhile, ended on a high with their first win of the week to end in fifth place ahead of Finland after a 4-1 result.



Nikalas Zemlyanova and Petar Gonchev created a 2-0 lead and two late goals from Aleksandar Todorov helped them stay out in front despite a Noa Sallinen goal.

Free-scoring France sweep to boys U18 II-A victory

Girls EuroHockey U18 Championship II-A (Zagreb, Croatia)



Eleonora di Paola’s 59th minute goal send Italy into raptures of delight as they won the girls EuroHockey U18 Championships II-A title in Zagreb in the closing minutes of a wonderful tournament.



It was an incredibly tight event from start to finish with each nation having different times in contention for gold and promotion to the top tier in 2025.



As such, it was fitting the tournament came down to the last action with Italy coming from seemingly nowhere to take the laurels.



Indeed, on Friday morning, they were bottom of the pool but a win over the Czech Republic and this 2-1 success against Switzerland saw them emerge.



Going into finals day, it looked a long-shot. Had either of Lithuania or the Czechs won the opening game, they would have taken gold.



Both had their chances in a game which ended 2-2. The latter initially took the lead via Kamila Minariková but replies from Adeina Tomkevičiūte and Rugilė Daukantaitė had Lithuania in pole position until eight minutes from the end.



But a Lucie Nová equaliser ruled Lithuania out of the running and left the Czechs still in the lead but needing the Swiss and Italy to draw – both required a win for their own targets.



Chiara Bevilacqua put Italy in front in the fourth minute and for a long time that looked to be enough for them before a true rollercoaster of an endgame occurred.



The Swiss equalised in the 57th minute via Tabea Schorno – putting the Czechs in the temporary lead – but di Paola got an instant response to make it 2-1 and start the party.



Speaking about the tournament, Italy’s Francesca Spinoglio said: “We supported each other until the end of the match and we are very proud of our result. During this week, the things which we can bring with us for our future are this experience and all the things we learned. We thank our coaches Roberto, Luca, Massimo and Mauro; thank you all and let’s go Italy!”



Italy go into the top division for 2025 while Czech Republic and Lithuania qualify for Championship II next time around.

Di Paola snatches girls II-A title for Italy in incredible finale

Boys EuroHockey U18 Championship (Krefeld, Germany)



Belgium will play Germany in the final of the boys EuroHockey U18 Championship in Krefeld following two mad-cap semi-final battles against the Netherlands and Spain, respectively.



The Belgians were the first to make it through to the final via a shoot-out after normal time ended 2-2. Jacky van Hout’s penalty corner was the only goal of the first half and put the Dutch in front.&nbsp;



Charlie Langendries equalised but van Hout put the Netherlands ahead once more in the 48th minute, 2-1. Langendries once more, though, sent the game to shoot-out with his seventh goal of the tournament.



There, Alexis van Havere was introduced in the Belgian goal and he made a series of good saves while Huge Molenaar scored vital goals in the last round of regulation shoot-outs and then again in sudden death for a 3-2 success.



Next, the hosts won the second semi final in one of the craziest games ever seen on this stage, winning 8-6 against Spain.&nbsp;



The drama started from minute one with Andrés Medina scoring with just 55 seconds gone. Germany responded with the next three for a strong 3-1 lead at half-time and they looked to be comfortable when they were 5-1 ahead when George Muhle scored his second in the 43rd minute.



Spain continued to fight, however, with Ton Moran cutting the gap. And they sniffed a chance when Jonas Cofalla was shown a red card with 12 minutes to go.



It came amid a run of seven goals in an 11-minute spell with Spain getting four of them but Germany always stayed just out of reach by a couple of goals to make it through.



In the 7th to 9th place playoffs, Ireland defeated Poland 6-1 with Matthew McKee scoring a hat-trick. It means Ireland will play Austria on Sunday for seventh overall while Poland end in ninth place.



The final will take place at 2.30pm (CET) while the bronze match is at 10am (CET); on pitch 2, Austria face Ireland for seventh at 9am (CET) and Scotland take on England at 11.15am (CET).

Belgium and Germany win boys U18 semi-final rollercoasters

Girls EuroHockey U18 Championship (Krefeld, Germany)



Germany and Belgium will meet in the girls EuroHockey U18 Championship final for the first time after they won hard-fought semi-finals against Spain and England, respectively, in Krefeld.



In the first tie of the day, two second half goals from Perinne de Clerck helped keep Belgium out of reach of England as they won 3-1 to earn their passage to the final.



Elise Bertram put them in front in the 18th minute with a sharp reaction to pick up a rebound and flick into the net; it followed a brilliant Lisl Denef burst into the circle to create the chance.



Louise Dewaet missed out on a second from the penalty spot before half-time but de Clerck took over from the spot just a few minutes later and this time found the net for 2-0.



Mia Moore got one back in the 35th minute when England pinched possession in the Belgian circle and she turned on a shot, striking home with venom.



But the game was settled by a classy routine with Dewaet disguising a drag-flick to de Clerck who swept home first time into the backboard.



Germany joined them to set up a double-decider against Belgium on Sunday as they got the best of Spain 2-1 in the second semi-final.



Mia Montag opened the scoring in the second quarter from a corner move back to the injector. Jessica Schwarz missed out on a stroke chance before half-time to give some extra breathing space between the teams and Spain took advantage of the reprieve.



They equalised with seven minutes left when Marta Alcaraz’s sweep got enough of a deflection from Tereasa Saenz to bounce over the line for 1-1.



The hosts, however, won it within two minutes via Lynn Krings – who grew up 500 metres from the Krefeld venue – from a corner, brilliantly adapting at the injector spot to slap home the crucial goal.



In the classification matches, Scotland edged out Austria in a shoot-out to go into the eighth place playoff game where they will meet Ireland for a second time this week. The Scots had trailed with three minutes to go before Lexie MacMillan equalised.



The Netherlands won the fifth place playoff with an 8-0 win over France; Anouk Brouwer scored four times in the victory.
