Women’s EuroHockey Indoor Championships III (Apace, Slovenia, January 20): Turkey won two games from two in impressive style on day one of the Women’s EuroHockey Indoor Championships III in Slovenia to lead their three-game competition.
Game 1: Slovakia 4-2 (2-0) Slovenia
Slovakia scored the first and last two goals to open the competition with a very tight win, showing a slightly fitter edge in the end. Lucia Kovalcikova and Natalia Fondrkova put them two up before Julia Nachtsheim and Melanie Smodis brought the game back level at 2-2. But two corner goals from Barbora Pucherova won the game for the Slovaks, both coming in the 32nd minute.
Game 2: Turkey 5-2 (1-2) Slovakia
Turkey came from a 2-1 half-time deficit to win their first game of the competition. Ozge Calayir got them off to a great start with a second minute goal but two penalty corners from Lucia Kovalcikova swapped the lead in Slovakia’s favour at half-time. They ran out of steam in the second half as Fatma Songul Gultekin equalised in the 25th minute, Ayla Esen put them back in front and Gultekin and Perihan Kucukkoc scored in the last three minutes to extend the winning margin.
Game 3: Slovenia 1-10 (1-8) Turkey
Turkey closed out day one with a superb performance, building an 8-1 half-time lead with two goals each from Ayla Esen and Perihan Kucukkoc with further goals from Meryem Oymak, Melis Kosker, Zeliha Kendir and Ozge Calayir with Laura Schmidlechner getting the one reply. Kucukkoc and Esen completed their hat tricks in the second half.
