Today is World Down Syndrome Day and the # this year is #lotsofsocks. A day to celebrate all people with Down Syndrome.

Why March 21?

On December 19, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly declared March 21 as World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD). According to worlddownsyndromeday.org, the date is significant (21st of the third month), to symbolise the ”uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down Syndrome.”

Why socks?

Well, chromosomes look like socks, thus giving birth to the idea of a worldwide ”Lots of Socks” campaign, to honour those with Down Syndrome, who have an extra chromosome. And mismatched just highlights the uniqueness of people with Down Syndrome!
