England and Germany’s men play out lively draw

Germany and England played out a hard-fought 1-1 draw to both move onto four points as Gonzalo Peillat’s drag-flick cancelled out James Gall’s stunning opening goal.

The first half ended scoreless with James Mazarelo making a couple of choice saves while there were a number of stoppages which meant the game never hit full rhythm.

Q3 saw Germany making more of the initial moves but England got the first goal in spectacular style, Gall weaving into space onto his backhand. His shot went like a thunderbolt into the roof of the net before Jean-Paul Danneberg could set himself.

The Honamas took the initiative after that and won four corners in Q4 with the fourth of them being dispatched by Gonzalo Peillat.

They had two further set pieces in a rousing closing phase but England stood firm with Mazarelo again robust in goal.

It lifts both sides up to four points from their two games to date, giving them the advantage going into their final group games on Tuesday when England play France – who are on three points – and Germany play Poland.
