Grasshoppers leap to top while Tevere EUR face nervous wait in Rome’s Trophy II

Grasshoppers jumped up to 10 points to lead Pool B of the men’s EuroHockey Club Trophy II in Rome while host club ASD Tevere EUR face a nervous wait on Saturday to determine their fate.

In the day’s opening game at the Euroma Stadium, Grasshoppers made it two wins from two in Pool B as they withstood a big fightback from Selçuklu Belediye SK to win 3-2.

They got off to a dream start with Oliver Haberthür and Mischa Gubser netted in the first quarter, augmented by an Imanuel Poulastrou goal before half-time.

Mehmet Aydin fired in two corners within a minute of each other to cut the gap to the minimum in the third quarter but the Swiss outfit held on to rise to 10 points.

They completed their group phase on Saturday against Danish side Slagelse who will be looking for at least a two-goal win to get into medal contention.

HC Bra, meanwhile, will also look to put the pressure on Grasshopper when they meet Belediye after their 5-2 Friday win over Slagelse.

It was a rollercoaster with Bra building a 3-0 lead before being pegged back to 3-2; two final quarter goals from the Italians made the full five points safe. Andrii Koshelenko was the star of the show with four goals.

In Pool A, hosts Tevere EUR played out a thriller with HK Zelina in which they led 4-2 at one stage but then required a 56th minute equaliser from Felix Dionisi Vici (pictured above by Michelle Heitmann) to draw 5-5.

The Croatian visitors had made the early inroads when Ivan Šoić and Mario Ilinović built a 2-1 lead but Dionisi Vici was inspired and his second quarter double and a Francisco Galbiatti stroke swapped the lead in favour of the Italians.

Zelina replied with Ilinović and Bohdan Kovalenko turning things around for a 5-4 lead with seven minutes to go before the hosts drew level.

It leaves Tevere EUR on seven points having completed their group games while Zelina can jump ahead of them and into Sunday’s final if they record a four-goal win over Portugal’s Casa Pia on Saturday.
