Two goals within a minute of each other saw Rotweiss Wettingen produce an incredible late comeback to jump back into first in Pool A and set up a women’s EuroHockey Club Trophy II final battle with Clydesdale Western.
The Swiss side were seemingly destined for third spot in the pool with time running out against Alanya Stars for whom Kübra Güzelal’s hat trick helped build and 2-0 and 3-1 lead.
But deep into the final quarter, Jessica Aebi pulled one back with five minutes to go and, almost instantly, Elena Trösch made it 3-3.
That scoreline was enough to see Rotweiss return to the top of the table, denying Alanya and WAC at the very last. Earlier, WAC had beaten Šiauliai Ginstrektė-Akademija 3-0 to put themselves into contention for the medal matches.
And so it proved as they will now face a bronze medal match on Sunday.
In Pool B, Clydesdale (pictured) opened the day got their business done early as they raced away from Cardiff & Met in the first quarter with three goals en route to an 11-0 win. That victory saw them confirm top spot with 26 goals scored in their three games.
Second place went to Gaziantep Polisgücü who won a 4-3 rollercoaster against HC Olten with Perihan Çinar scoring the winning goal in the 57th minute. The contest has been level on three occasions before that with the late win enough for the Turkish team to jump above Cardiff.
It means Sunday’s schedule begins with Ginstrekte facing Olten in the 7th/8th place match at 9.00am (local time) followed by Alanya Stars v Cardiff & Met for fifth place at 11.15am.
WAC take on Gaziantep for third spot at 1.30pm and the tournament concludes with the final between Rotweiss Wettingen and Clydesdale at 3.45pm.
