Spanish women on the hunt for World Cup 2026 ticket

Spain’s women are one of the sides in the hunt for a direct World Cup qualifying ticket as they look to make improvements on their 2023 EuroHockey Championship campaign when they ended in sixth place.

Since then, a quarter-final spot at the Olympic Games and a sixth place in the FIH Pro League with a much-changed panel has been their form.

That Pro League run saw them impress in India with four successive wins – two over Germany and two against India – as well as further successes against England and Belgium that show they can pick off results.

The squad is mostly based in Spain with five players from national champions Club de Campo, four from Junior FC and three from Real Club de Polo.

The hugely experienced Lucía Jiménez and Clara Badia are the two based outside of the country, both playing with Mannheimer HC in Germany.

It will be a first international tournament in Spanish colours or Luciana Molina who previously played for Argentine 37 times, including at the 2015 Pan-Am Games. She played in 15 of the 16 FIH Pro League games this season since opting for Spain.

Other new faces since the Olympic Games are Teresa Lima who was player of the tournament at 2023 FIH Junior World Cup; Berta Agullo who was almost a Pro League ever-present; Berta Serrahima and Paula Jiménez.

Indeed, half of the Olympic panel has moved on since then. Maria Lopez has retired while Begoña Garcia has given birth to her first child with husband Alvaro Iglesias who plays with the Spanish men’s team.

Corner star Lola Riera, Belén Iglesias, Bea Pérez and Alejandra Torres-Quevedo are among others no longer involved while Laura Barrios does not join her twin sister Sara in this line-up. As such, there is only one set of twins involved this week – Coti and Flor Amundson.

Carlos Garcia Cuenca heads up the coaching team.
