Belgium dominant in 5-1 win over Spain

Belgium made it two wins from two as a dominant first half performance put them out of sight of Spain, becoming the first side to reach the semi-finals of the men’s competition.

Gauthier Boccard engineered the first with a glorious interception and subsequent assist for William Ghislain in front of the goalkeeper.

Alexander Hendrickx slammed in a corner two minutes later and they were three up in the 18th minute when Arthur Van Doren raed around the left baseline and flicked waist-high to Florent van Aubel who volleyed in.

Jose Basterra poked in from close quarters to get one back in the 42nd minute but a stroke was added by Hendrickx.

Nelson Onana then scored the goal of the game with a cracking shot from the left of the D after an amazingly fast move up the field.

“We know it is always a good battle with Spain,” Van Doren said afterwards. “Their temperament and culture is always 100% so we had to fight from the first to the last minute. The score reflects a good performance, maybe a little flattering, but we can be very happy with the outcome.”

Men’s Pool A: Belgium 5 (A Hendrickx 2, F Van Aubel, W Ghislain, N Onana) Spain 1 (J Basterra)
