Women’s EuroHockey Championship III (Alanya, Türkiye) – day two round-up
Luxembourg created history with their first ever victory in senior international hockey as they won against Hungary while Türkiye confirmed their place in the final already with a win over Ukraine.
Luxembourg opened the day by recording their first victory with Natalie Paul scoring their goals in a 2-1 success against Hungary. Indeed, those were the first ever goals for the country after three previous blanks, marking a milestone in their growth.
Szonja Nagy gave Hungary an 11th minute lead but Paul turned things around in the second half with strikes in the 35th and 57th minutes.
In game two, Türkiye and Ukraine played out a tight game with the Turks leading at half-time via captain Kübra Güzelal but it was level early in the second half through Sofiia Basanets.
But the Turks finished the stronger with Zeliha Kendir restoring the lead with 13 minutes to go and Güzelal made the result safe with a third goal for a 3-1 win.
It means the key game on Thursday is Ukraine’s fixture against Luxembourg with the former needing a draw while Luxembourg need to produce a big shock to earn a final spot.
The group stage concludes with Hungary facing the hosts.
