Mannheim make their mark at Club Cup in Šiauliai as Pool B faces big battle for semi spots

Mannheimer HC ended day one of the EuroHockey Indoor Club Cup as the only side with a perfect record as they edged out both Sanse Complutense and Waterloo Ducks in Šiauliai, Lithuania.

The first was down to a two-goal spree in the last four minutes from Sonja Zimmerman against Complutense for a 4-2 win. They found the Spanish side a tough one to break down and Alejandra de la Llama equalised twice to make for a close-run battle.

And Waterloo made life similarly difficult in a 3-1 win for the Germans. This time, Alexine Matthysen and Zimmerman built a two-goal lead before Marie Ronquetti pulled one back. But Zimmerman’s 39th minute corner assured they top Pool B on 10 points and assured of a place in the semi-finals.

The Ducks had earlier proven too strong for hosts Šiauliai Ginstrektė-Akademija with Ronquetti scoring five times in a 9-2 win.

Complutense, meanwhile, finished the day with a 5-2 win over Ginstrekte with two goals from three-time Olympian Lola Riera helping them create a 4-1 lead in the first half.

The result means they now sit on six points alongside Waterloo but the Belgian side have a better goal difference, giving them the edge when the two sides meet on Saturday morning.

In Pool B, it is all to play for in the final round of group games. Ege Yildizlari’s youngsters showed few nerves as they defeated a much more experienced SK Slavia Prague with Under-21 internationals Sila Erkoç, Esma Idik and Sude Nur Kurt adding to a goal from Sila Çelebi to create a 4-2 victory.

Elzemiek Zandee was the key player for SCHC as they won 3-1 against MSC Sumchanka; her corner and a stroke either side of Maud van den Heuvel’s lobbed finish made the difference.

The Dutch club looked well set to repeat the feat against Slavia van den Heuvel and Zandee combining to make it 3-1 at the break. But the Czechs fought back superbly in the second half with Nikol Babická’s second goal and a final minute Natálie Hájkova strike earning a 3-3 draw.

Sumchanka also bounced back with a monster 10-2 win over Ege Yildizlari with Karyna Leonova netting six times. The result lifts the Ukraine club up to second in the group with the Dutch first and the Turks in third place.

However, all can change hands quickly in the final round of group games on Saturday morning.
