McEwan snatches late draw for Scotland against Spain

Jessica Buchanan produced a remarkable performance as Scotland snatched a 1-1 draw with Spain, keeping women’s Pool B wide open.

Lucia Jimenez got Spain’s only goal in the 12th minute, her bouncing shot coming after a series of waves of attacks. Patricia Alvarez was lurking in front of goal looking for a potential touch, doing enough to put off the otherwise outstanding Buchanan.

Through the second quarter, Spain ran up seven penalty corners but could not find a way through while Marta Segu cracked the ball off the outside of the post from a huge chance in the second half.

And they were caught on the break with four minutes to go when Ellie MacKenzie’s darting run saw her cut inside from the left and lay the ball on a plate for Heather McEwan to touch in.

Buchanan was outstanding throughout as she saved another three corners in the last stages as the Tartan Sticks got a big point while Spain are on two points after two matches.
