Orient Lyngby crown dream debut with Challenge II gold

Women’s EuroHockey Club Challenge II

Final: HC Copenhagen (DEN) – Orient Lyngby (DEN) 0-0, Orient win shoot-out 4-3

Orient Lyngby turned the tables on hosts HC Copenhagen to win the women’s EuroHockey Club Challenge II with a shoot-out win over their Danish rivals.

In the group stage, Copenhagen came out on top 2-1 but this tie was an incredibly tight and eventually ended 0-0 in normal time. Doing so made it a dream debut for the club who had not previously been involved in an outdoor women’s Euro club event.

In the shoot-out, Maria Garcia and Alejandra Alvarez netted in the first two rounds while Melisa Cardoso kept out Copenhagen’s second round effort for a 2-1 lead.

Imke van der Loo equalised in round three (2-2) before further goals were traded, leaving it 3-3 after the regulation series of five. It led to sudden death where Garcia scored once more while Cardoso kept out one more effort for a famous win.

3rd/4th Place: SLF Mesaicos (SWE) – Seinäjoki United (FIN) 3-2

SLF Mesaicos finished in third place as they survived lots of late drama to take the 3-2 win over Finland’s Seinäjoki United. The Swedish side led in the third minute via Elijn Kroese but the Finns equalised quickly via Lilian Kigen.

It remained 1-1 until Q3 when Mesaicos edged back in front through Aimee Mackenzie and they had two strokes down the closing stretch.

Maddelena Bin finished the second of them but a Reeta Malkamäki corner in the 58th minute kept the game alive right until the final whistle.
