Poland and Ukraine on the double in Walcz in men’s EuroHockey 5s final showdown

The men’s EuroHockey 5s Championship final will mirror the women’s decider as Poland and Ukraine emerged from their semi-finals contest the gold medal game in Walcz.

Early in the day, Ukraine confirmed their place in the semis with a 19-3 win over Finland, heading the group with Switzerland’s comfortable win over Sweden leaping them over Lithuania into second spot.

In Pool A, Türkiye gave themselves a fighting chance of advancing when they beat Cyprus 11-2. It meant the Turks needed Poland to beat Italy by eight goals and it looked a possibility when the Poles scored the first five goals without reply.

Indeed, it was 10-2 with four minutes left but crucial late goals from Simone Zoppi and Claudio Brocco put the Italians through.

Poland backed that win up with a 6-3 victory against Switzerland, doing most of the damage in the second half with four goals putting them out of sight, Eryk Bembenek’s double bringing his tournament total to 14 goals.

Ukraine impressed in the second semi as they defeated Italy 8-3 with a hat trick from Andrii Koshelenko meaning they were always in control of the scoreboard.

The final will take place at 1.45pm (CET) on pitch 1 while the bronze game between Italy and Switzerland is at 9.15am.

Czechia’s 14-1 win over Lithuania means they will compete for fifth place on Saturday against Türkiye, 13-6 winners over Sweden. The fifth place game is at 11.30am and the seventh/eighth fixture is on at 8.30am.

Finland won the 9th/10th place playoff with a 4-3 win over Cyprus, Sampo Hirvoja capping a remarkable comeback from 3-1 down with a last second winner.
