Poland to meet Ukraine in girls U16 final while Austria face Swiss in boys decider

Poland and Ukraine both won high-octane semi-finals 3-2 to reach the girls EuroHockey 5s U16 Championship final, edging out Switzerland and Austria to reach Saturday’s decider in Zagreb.

For Ukraine, they came back from 2-1 down at half-time with Anna Shybchenko and Alla Trypilska turning things around against the Austrians.

For Poland, they nudged in front of the Swiss at half-time via Nelly Górski with the first f her eventual trio of goals. The Swiss did get back level at 2-2 via Sanne Meuwsen with two minutes to go but Górski won it in the closing seconds.

Their final will take place at 1.15pm (CET) while Austria and Switzerland contest for bronze at 10.45am.

Elsewhere, Türkiye took fifth place with a shoot-out win over Croatia having earlier defeated Georgia. Wales ended seventh with an 11-1 win over the Georgians.

In the boys competition, the final on Saturday will be between Switzerland and Austria following their respective wins over Ukraine and Poland.

In the first semi, a burst of three goals from Benedikt Meisel (two) and Maximilian Weisswasser built a 3-0 Austrian lead at half-time and they stayed clear of the Poles to win 4-1.

Switzerland advanced by the same scoreline with all the goals coming in the second half. Moris Menke and Colin Zeis created some daylight between the teams before Nazar Batekha kept Ukraine in contention.

But a pair of Sebastian Senn goals in the 27th minute moved Switzerland beyond reach. The bronze match on Saturday will be at 9.30am (CET) before the final tips off at 12pm.

Türkiye edged out Wales 6-5 and then beat Croatia with something to spare to finish in the fifth place overall. Wales took seventh thanks to a 5-4 shoot-out win against Slovakia after normal time ended 5-5.
