Women’s EuroHockey U21 Championship (Valencia, Spain) – Pool C
Scotland fought back from a goal down to beat Ireland 2-1 and win the last remaining place at 2028’s women’s EuroHockey U21 Championship.
Needing a win to move above the junior green army, the Scots fell behind in the ninth minute when Rebekah Lennon scored her third goal of the tournament from a penalty corner.
But Scotland got back on terms midway through the second quarter after a series of corners with Ava Wadsworth on the mark.
It set up a tense second half with the defining moment coming in the 34th minute when Caterina Nelli scoring a penalty stroke for 2-1.
And that was how it stayed as Ireland threw what they could forward, earning a corner on the final whistle but they missed out on the goal they needed to avoid relegation when a last second penalty corner went amiss.
For Ireland, there was some consolation in that their seventh place finish meant they qualified for next year’s Junior World Cup along with Scotland.
England, meanwhile, ended in fifth place when they comfortably defeated in Wales 8-0 with the goals shared between Mia Moore (two), Liv Breed, Biba Mills, Evie Grindal, Beth Gardens, Izzy Yonge and Evie Smith.
