Spectacular Sport Arena Wien to host women’s EuroHockey Indoor Championship 2028

Austria will host the women’s EuroHockey Indoor Championship 2028 for the first time since 2000 with the spectacular Sport Arena Wien welcoming the event from January 20th to 23rd, 2028.

The Arena – formally opened in 2025 – provides the perfect stage for the 24th edition of the competition with capacity for 3,000 in a central Vienna location.

Welcoming the announcement, Peter Proksch, Sports Director of the Austrian Hockey Federation Women said: “We are honored to host the EuroHockey Indoor Championship 2028 in Vienna.

“This event is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our hockey community. Austria has a strong tradition in indoor hockey and we see this as an opportunity to further develop the sport in our country.

“Our bid was driven by the desire to offer a high-quality tournament that reflects the values of fairness, excellence and hospitality.”

It comes during a special period for the Red Foxes, winning back-to-back bronzes in 2024 and 2026 in Europe and Indoor World Cup silver in 2023 and 2025.

With that context, Austrian captain Johanna Czech is looking to draw on a huge home crowd to support their push for yet another medal.

“Playing at home in such a prestigious tournament is a special moment for any athlete,” she said.

“We are proud to represent Austria and look forward to competing in front of our home crowd. Hosting this championship is not just about the competition; it’s about inspiring young players and showing them what is possible with passion and commitment.”

Clemens Rarrel, Project Lead for the EuroHockey Indoor Championship 2028, added Sport Arena Wien lends itself to an event of this magnitude.

“Vienna provides an excellent setting for this event with modern facilities and a central location that makes it accessible for teams and fans alike.

“Our goal is to organise a smooth and memorable championship that highlights the best of indoor hockey. We are confident that this event will leave a positive and lasting impression on everyone involved.

“We are excited to work closely with EuroHockey to create an event that sets new standards for indoor hockey and leaves a positive impact on the sport’s development in Austria and beyond.”

The competition will feature 10 nations in 2028 with hosts Austria joined by 2026 champions Germany, Czechia, Spain, Belgium, Ukraine, Switzerland and Poland along with newly promoted Türkiye and Italy.
