Men’s EuroHockey U21 Championship II-B (Poznan, Poland) – day 4 round-up
Milo Thompson’s 50th minute goal sent Ireland to the top of the men’s EuroHockey U21 Championship II-B in Poznan and one point away from European promotion and a Junior World Cup spot.
He struck the only goal of their game with Poland, ending the hosts 100% record, as they deservedly took the points with a 1-0 win, their fourth in succession.
It means they need a draw or better against winless Ukraine on Saturday morning to earn the prizes on offer.
Five goals from Gabriel Biocca powered Italy to an 8-0 win over Lithuania, moving them back into second place on goal difference. They will hope Ireland can be defeated on Saturday by Ukraine and then they can defeat Poland; the Poles will also be hoping for an Irish defeat but have 15 goals gap to the Irish.
Earlier, two goals in the closing quarter saw Croatia get their first win of the competition as they defeated Ukraine 2-1.
Oleksandr Boiko had given Ukraine the lead from a corner but they missed a stroke chance to go two ahead and it cost them as Noa Matošević and Leon Hercigonja scored in the last 11 minutes to take the win.
