Baltic Champs the champions at men’s Challenge II in Porvoo

Baltic Champs won the men’s EuroHockey Indoor Club Challenge II to complete a memorable weekend in Porvoo, getting the best of FHC Slavia 1921 in the final.

In a tight final, the first quarter ended scoreless before the pace sped up in the second quarter. Laimonas Aleknavičius broke the deadlock; Milush Stoyanov equalised but Lukas Janukaitis made it 2-1 just before half-time.

The Champs eked out a 3-1 lead through Darius Jackevičius only for Stoyanov to reduce the gap going into the final quarter.

From there, it was a huge tussle until the end with the 4-2 result only with one of the last plays of the game from Povilas Aleknavičius.

Oslo SK finished their tournament on a high with an impressive 8-1 win over Hockey Team 85. They were in control in Q1 when Mohammad Khidash Kiyani and Mohammed Ashraf scored for a 2-0 lead.

Ashraf would go on to score four times – three coming within two minutes of each other – to extend their lead to 7-0 amid a flurry of Q4 action. Santeri Karjalainen did get a consolation effort for the Finns but Oslo had the third spot.

In the morning games, Baltic Champs and Slavia confirmed their places in the final. The former made it so when they defeated Oslo SK 5-2, benefitting from a dream start with goals from Giedrius Gridziuška and Žygimantas Balsiukas in the first five minutes.

Oslo fought back to 3-2 but two goals in the last minute from the Lithuanians denied them a chance at reaching the final.

It rendered the meeting of Slavia and Hockey Team 85 academic and the Bulgarians duly won out 12-1.
