East Grinstead and Start Brzeziny leading the way in Porto

East Grinstead and KS Hokej Start Brzeziny are leading the way at the women’s EuroHockey Indoor Club Trophy in Porto, putting them in great shape to reach the promotion playoff phase.

They both picked up two wins out of two to lead their respective groups but there remains plenty of drama on the horizon on Saturday morning with plenty of permutations to come.

The day started with Watsonians winning well against debuting Milano Hockey Prato with Emily Dark’s corner setting them on their way with Ailsa Small and Genevieve Hussell following up for a 3-0 lead at half-time.

The Scots continued to control the game to win 4-0 with Small scoring again.

East Grinstead got their campaign under with a comprehensive 8-2 win over HAHK Mladost. The 16-year-old Biba Mills was the star turn, scoring seven times in total with four of them coming in the first half.

Hot on the heels of Poland’s World Cup gold, Start Brzeziny started Pool A with an important 2-1 win over Swiss side Rotweiss Wettingen.

It was evenly balanced throughout with Tamara Trösch’s corner in the sixth minute giving Rotweiss a narrow lead in the first half. The Polish club, however, turned things around after the break via Oliwia Krychniak and Dzyiana Varanovich.

Railway Union then spoiled the home party with an impressive 6-1 win over host club Grupo Desportivo do Viso with Lily Lloyd netting twice in the first five minutes. Orla Fox and Orla Patton put the game out of sight.

The second phase of matches started with Milano winning their first ever European game. Giulia Galligani set them on their way from the penalty spot in the second quarter; Mladost equalised via Saš Abramović levelled with eight minutes left but late strikes from Elettra Bormida and Galligani earned a 3-1 success.

It gives them a chance of going through to the semis should they get something from their game with East Grinstead.

The English side, however, will be the favourites after they picked up a second win of the day when they saw off Watsonians 6-1.

This time, Chloe Brown was to the fore with a hat trick. After a scoreless first quarter, three in Q2 from EG gave them a 3-1 advantage and they pushed on further in the second half with three more goals.

Back in Pool A, Rotweiss got a vital win over Railway Union, coming from behind twice to snatch a 4-2 victory. Orla Patton scored in the first minute and 10th minute to make it 1-0 and 2-1 but the Swiss side were level before half-time via Jessica Aebi.

The key moment came just before the end of Q3 via Elena Trösch’s goal and they had extra insurance when Ria Müller completed the run.

Start Brzeziny then closed the evening with an 11-2 win over GD do Viso, Krychniak scoring a first quarter hat trick to create the winning margin.

It means the Polish side need a draw to top the group when they face Railway on Saturday morning.
