EuroHockey Championships 2029 to be hosted by KNHB at state-of-the-art Wagener Stadium

EuroHockey is delighted to announce the rights to host EuroHockey Championships 2029 have been awarded to the KNHB.

The iconic Wagener Stadium, on the border of Amsterdam and Amstelveen in the Netherlands, will once again be the venue for the competition.

The decision was confirmed last weekend by the EuroHockey executive board. It means the continent’s biggest competition will return to the iconic venue for a sixth time having previously host in 1983 (men only), 1995 (women only) and joint men’s and women’s events in 2009, 2017 and a restricted capacity event due to Covid in 2021.

The tournament will coincide with the continued evolution of the venue in Amsterdamse Bos with the development of a high-performance training centre in and around the Wagener Stadium, starting right after this year’s World Cup.

The construction plans consist of three new state-of-the-arts stands, a new high-performance centre building with 1,500m2 of top-level facilities integrated in the south stand and two new pitches, which are already being built.

The Dutch bid won out following a highly competitive process with compelling bids considered from both Spain and Belgium.

Speaking about the decision, EuroHockey President Marcos Hofmann said: “We are delighted to confirm we will be back in Amsterdam/Amstelveen for the EuroHockey Championships in 2029.

“We look forward to working with the KNHB and the local authorities to make this another truly special festival hockey as this famous venue continues its modern evolution.”

KNHB CEO Erik Gerritsen added: “We are truly excited to get the opportunity to host the EuroHockey Championships in 2029 once again and we are looking forward showcasing the best what European hockey has to offer in a full stadium every day.

“Furthermore, we are grateful EuroHockey believed in our legacy ambition of developing the best state-of-the-art, fully dedicated hockey stadium and high-performance centre possible before the start of the EuroHockey Championships 2029.

“And therefore, we are motivated and confident we will be able to realise this legacy ambition together with our official partners, government partners, and EuroHockey. The hard work begins tomorrow.”
