Coach Robin Rösch’s Austria have qualified for the top division of the men’s EuroHockey Championship for the sixth time, winning their home qualifier tournament last summer in Arminen.
Key to their chances will be Fülöp Losonci who is their key goalscorer, netting 29 times in 50 outdoor internationals, seemingly the natural successor to Michael Körper who finished up his career on this stage in 2023.
Indeed, that change is indicative of a few changes to the guard with the likes of the legendary Benny Stanzl in the management team as opposed to playing this time while Oliver Binder, Alexander Bele, Franz Lindengrun, Leon Thörnblom, Xaver Hasun and goalkeeper Mateusz Szymczyk not around this time after glittering careers, particularly on the indoor circuit.

With the last minute absence of Florian Unterkircher – he will be an assistant coach at the tournament – due to a recent cruciate ligament tear, it means Florian Steyrer is now the most experienced player in the line-up.
As such, there is trust in youth with Jakob Bauer set to make his senior team debut; along with Arthur Kucera, they are two players from the Under-18 squad have been nominated.
Thus far in 2025, they finished in fifth place at the FIH Nations Cup 2, a tournament which did see them win four out of their five games – including against eventual winners Scotland – but they went out of the group stages on goal difference.
Nikolas Wellen put in a star turn there, netting four times in four games. Since then, their formal capped matches have seen them defeat Switzerland twice in a series in Olten.
Josef Winkler represents HC Wien, the Austrian club champions, while Losonci, Bauer and Moritz Frey were all part of the 2025 Indoor World Cup silver medal winning side.
They finished a creditable seventh in 2023 with a 4-1 win over Wales the highlight, equaling their best ever finish at this level.
