GB stamp two tickets to Paris as Germany’s men join the party

Great Britain’s men and women and Germany’s men added to the European qualifiers for this summer’s Olympic Games following another day of drama.

For GB’s women, they had the edge over Ireland with a 2-1 result. Sarah Jones put them in front in the first half with a sharp touch in the wake of a scramble following a penalty corner, guiding home at close range.

And they put further daylight between the teams in the second half when Katie Robertson swept in Hannah Martin’s ball through.

Ireland earned a number of penalty corners in the closing quarter but their only reply came with the very last play of the day, leading to a weird scenario as the Irish goal preceded Great Britain celebrations of their ticket to Paris.

Jones was named player of the game and she said afterwards: “Emotional is definitely the word. Just absolutely thrilled to qualify for the Olympics. I think we had a fantastic tournament.

“Today probably wasn’t the best hockey that we’ve played but we’ve played some really good hockey throughout this tournament and I know that’s something we’ll build on leading up to Paris.”

For the men, goals in quick succession from Phil Roper and Sam Ward in the second quarter set them on their way to a 3-1 win over New Zealand.

Kane Russell halved the deficit from a corner but Ward’s second at the end of the third quarter proved a defining moment.

Ward said of the success: “It was just a fantastic game of GB hockey at the end of the day. Obviously, the girls going and winning earlier was amazing and us doing it now – it’s nice not having to play the third-fourth tomorrow!”

For Germany, they were comfortable 4-0 winners over Pakistan with Niklas Wellen and Tom Grambusch netting in the first half.

Wellen and Marco Miltkau added another couple in the third quarter to send the world champions Germans en route to the Olympics.
