Germany and Ireland drew 0-0, a result which was enough to see the hosts advance to the women’s semi-finals, dropping their opponents into Pool C.
For the Green Army, they needed a two-goal win to advance and they gave it a good go against higher ranked opposition but could not find the goals required.
Hannah McLoughlin had the biggest chance of the first half after Emily Kealy was fouled en route to goal but the ensuing penalty stroke was blocked by Julia Sonntag’s outstretched glove.
They also edged the corner count three to one in a tight-knit contest with limited clear openings on goal.
Into the second half, Jette Fleschutz hit the outside of the goal from a great chance after Sophia Schwabe’s forceful run while Ireland survived a spell with nine players as Germany came on strong. A corner shot whizzed by the post, keeping it at 0-0.
The final quarter was a scramble with chances at both ends as Ireland threw what they could forward but none were converted at either end, leaving a result which suited Germany far more than the Irish.
