Ireland take silver in Chile as Scotland win gold in Oman

Ireland had to settle for a silver medal from the FIH Nations Cup in Chile after they were denied the title in a shoot-out by New Zealand.

The Black Sticks opened the scoring in the first quarter with Emila Surridge scoring in the 6th minute with a backhand shot from mid-circle.

The Green Army piled on the pressure as time went on but could not make the most of their series of penalty corners.

They did eventually get level after they pulled their goalie with six minutes remaining in the match.

This proved to be successful as Kathryn Mullan powered in a shot through Grace O’Hanlon and they had a further corner after that in the last three minutes but, again, New Zealand held firm.

Regulation time ended in a draw, forcing the match to a shootout. New Zealand proved to be more clinical in the shootout, winning 4-2 and taking home the gold medal.

For Ireland, they had won their first four matches with victories over Scotland (3-0), New Zealand (1-0), Korea (2-0) and USA (2-1).

Scotland ended up in fifth place overall, ending with a 2-0 win over Japan which also saw them rise to 15th place in the world, the highest they have ever been.

The previous week, the Scottish men won the FIH Nations Cup 2 when they got the best of Egypt 4-2 in the final in Oman.

Struan Walker fired in a double either side of a goal from Jamie Golden before Austin Thomas made it 4-0 early in the second half.

It completed the perfect week for the Scots, adding to wins over Oman, Austria, USA and Poland.

The Poles ended in third place overall, finishing a shoot-out win over USA while Austria were fifth, concluding with a 3-1 success against China.
