The EuroHockey Solidarity through Great Governance (SGG) project’s latest visit took in extensive meetings with the Federacio Portugal de Hoquei (FPH) along with the Portuguese Ministry for Youth and Sport Institute.
The SGG project is a two-year pilot programme for developing organisational strategies of member national associations linked to their national Olympic committee and ministry of sport strategic objectives.
Through this initial phase of the Erasmus+ supported project, EuroHockey will focus on the future development of the SGG strategy with the target to create a pilot scheme to enable clear, costed and scheduled plans for the strategies of each national association.
Via these visits, EuroHockey Head of Strategy and Development Tom Pedersen-Smith and Oaks Consultancy’s Phil Taylor are collecting key information on the state of play of member national associations and their approach to delivering data backed strategies and decisions/outcomes.
This will, in turn, be analysed to collate into a research report with the goal of forming six pilot programmes for national associations, to attain an understanding of needs and the complexities of attaining strategic resources in their country.
It follows similar meetings in Türkiye, Croatia, Bulgaria and Ukraine earlier this year with Portugal completing the set of nations taking part in this EU funded project.
To this end, FPH President Bruno Santos is thrilled to see the ball roll on in his country.
“In the wake of political instability that initially hindered the start of the SGG in Portugal, there has been a significant turning point,” he said.
“The recent visit by Tom and Phil [Taylor], holds immense importance. Their presence not only bridges cultural gaps but also sheds light on the unique realities of Portuguese sports, particularly the one of Portuguese hockey.
“The meetings at the Portuguese Institute of Sports and Youth (IPDJ), which demonstrated a commitment to overcoming obstacles and the ones held with the staff and board of the Portuguese Hockey Federation fostered collaboration and enlightened them the reality of portuguese hockey!
“In summary, I believe that all the conditions are now in place for the SGG project to kick off at full steam.”
