Rakovnik, Glasgow and Alanya see first drama of women’s Euro club weekend

Twenty-one women’s teams began their EuroHockey journey campaign on Friday in Czechia, Scotland and Türkiye, all vying to bring glory to their clubs. Here’s how day one played out:

Women’s EuroHockey Club Trophy I – Rakovnik

In Rakovnik, Pool A’s opening game saw Hampstead & Westminster edge out Loreto in a meeting between the current English and Irish league table-toppers with Catherine Ledesma’s first quarter goal enough to grab the points for H&W. Today sees the Dubliners face Italian side SG Amsicora.

In Pool B, Rotweiss Wettingen and Cambrai HC was a close affair. Lisa Schnyder opened the scoring in the seco2nd minute, but the French team equalised through Carolina Carrizo. Despite several chances, the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

The day ended with the home team HC 1972 Rakovník, led by coach Martin Seemann, facing a strong Scottish team Watsonians HC.

After an even start and the first goal at the end of the first quarter, the match turned into a one-sided affair. The Scots eventually won 8-0, with Sarah Jamieson, Emily Dark, Katherine Holdgate and Anna Logan among the scorers.

Women’s EuroHockey Club Trophy II – Glasgow

Austria’s two sides made great starts to their life in Glasgow as AHTC and WAC both won well in Glasgow on opening day.

For AHTC, they won the only game of Pool A with a 2-0 success against Swiss runners-up HC Oltern 2-0 with Philippa Proksch and Maria Esser giving them the points.

They have a chance of nailing down a final spot should they win against Lithuania’s Šiauliai Ginstrektė-Akademija today.

In Pool B,  Johanna Buchleitner netted twice, followed by Isabella Klausbruckner with a well-placed shot, to set up WAC for a 4-0 win over Swansea.

France’s Saint Germain, meanwhile, defeated the hosts Clydesdale Western 3-1 with Olympian Yohanna Lhopital scoring twice in the first half.

Women’s EuroHockey Club Challenge I – Alanya

Three very tight battles played out in Alanya with Cardiff & Met grabbing a late goal to get the ball rolling in Pool B. Millie Barnes netted with less than two minutes to go for a 1-0 win against Gibraltar’s Europa.

They have the early advantage with Poland’s UKS Swarek Swarzędz drawing 2-2 with Portugal’s Grupo Desportivo do Viso with Swarek’s Maria Drozda getting the equaliser in the closing minutes. It helped them recover from a 2-0 deficit with time running out in Q3.

In Pool A, Ukraine’s IFK SumDPU won 2-0 against Luxembourg with Kateryna Oliinyk’s goal in the 39th minute augmented in the dying seconds by Oleksandra Pikhulia.
