Rapid AHTC Wien’s rise put to the test with women’s Club Trophy I

Women’s EuroHockey Club Trophy I

AHTC Wien host the women’s EuroHockey Club Trophy I in Vienna this weekend following their incredible rise up three divisions since 2021.

There, they will face a tough initial four-team group with reigning champions Hampstead & Westminster and 2025 bronze medalists Loreto as well as Czech newcomers TJ Plzeň-Litice.

In Pool A, it is a French affair with Saint Germain and Lille in the mix along with an experienced MSC Sumchanka and Italian champions SG Amsicora.

The winner of each group will contest Monday’s final with second place in each group playing for bronze.

Pool A: Lille MHC (FRA), MSC Sumchanka (UKR), SG Amsicora ASD (ITA), Saint Germain (FRA)

French champions Saint Germain earned their spot in Trophy I by virtue of their runners-up position last year in Glasgow just behind AHTC Wien. Since then, they won their national title and are topping the French league with an unbeaten record after 12 matches.

They have plenty of firepower with the likes of Olympians Yohanna Lhopital, Delfina Gaspari and Gabrielle Verrier among the goals.

They are joined in the group by fellow French side Lille MHC who return to European club competition after a four-year gap having previously contested the Trophy in 2018, 2021 and 2022 with Camille Contant-Devos playing each of those tournaments.

They are back thanks to their runner-up spot last season in the French championship; this season, they are in fourth place in the French league where they are proving hard to beat with just two losses from their 12 matches so far.

Ukraine’s MSC Sumchanka are back at Trophy level after a year in the EHL last year in Den Bosch. They finished in fourh spot in both 2023 and 2024.

Theirs is a panel which spends a lot of time together as they form the backbone of the Ukraine national indoor and outdoor sides as well as having won the indoor club cup in 2025.

Karyna Leonova is their goal machine while Anastasiia Syhshyna, Valeria Zaitseva, Kateryna Popova and Olha Honcharenko bring quality to their game.

SG Amsicora ASD were fifth place finishers a year ago and they retained their place in Europe by winning the Italian league last season.

And they are in good form since their outdoor return, winning both of their Serie A games. They are captained by club legend Giulia Stagno having carried the Olympic torch in the build-up to this year’s Winter Olympics in Cortina. Maryna Vynohradova is another icon of the sport with extensive international experience.

Pool B: AHTC Wien (AUT), Hampstead & Westminster (ENG), Loreto HC (IRL), TJ Plzeň-Litice (CZE)

Hampstead & Westminster are looking to defend the title they won a year ago in Rakovnik, beating Watsonians 3-2 in the final with a last minute Tyler Lench goal.

They are going well once again this season, sitting in second place behind pace-setters Surbiton with a spot in the final eight playoff stages secured. The side is captained by Esme Burge with Holly Hunt and goalkeeper Miriam Pritchard among their key figures.

Ireland’s Loreto have undergone several changes since winning the 2025 EY Hockey League with Mia Jennings, Caitlin Sherin (to Junior FC) and Caoimhe Perdue (Rotterdam) moving abroad. They have, however, continued their momentum and retained the regular season title in Ireland last Sunday with three rounds of matches to go.

Their side features internationals Christina Hamill, Lisa Mulcahy and Emily Kelay who all helped Ireland qualify for the World Cup earlier this year. They finished in third place in the Trophy a year ago.

AHTC Wien have been the standard setters in Austria for the past number of years, rising up through the divisions in some style. They started in Challenge II in 2021, going up through the divisions before winning Trophy II in Glasgow last year.

The likes of captain Laura Kern, Johanna Czech, Miriam Gerö, Katharina Proksch and Anja Haselsteiner have been key figures along the way, picking up numerous titles both indoors and outdoors. They have a perfect record outdoors in the Austrian league.

TJ Plzeň-Litice are making their debut in women’s EuroHockey Club action having finished in second place in the Extra Liga’s regular season last year behind Slavia Prague. Their central players will be Lucie Duchková and goalkeeper Anna Linková who were part of the Czechia national team last summer. For all of their panel, it is their debut on this stage and they sit in third place in their domestic league.
