Start Brzeziny and Luxembourg assured of gold medal match in Challenge II in Poland

Hosts KS Start Brzeziny and HC Luxembourg are through to a final on Monday with a group game to spare following their second successive victories in women’s EuroHockey Club Challenge II.

Metpack Alanya Stars are almost there, too, leaving the major intrigue on Sunday to see whether Europa or HK Zrinjevac will join them in the gold medal and promotion matches.

Game 5 Europa FC Hockey Club v Metpack Alanya Stars Hokey SK 0-2

Metpack Alanya Stars Hokey SK secured a 2-0 victory over Europa FC Hockey Club, making it two wins from two and putting them within touching distance of a final brth. Alanya took the lead in the second quarter with a penalty corner goal from Kübra Güzelal in the 16th minute. Güzelal then doubled the lead with a field goal in the 22nd minute.

Europa FC struggled to break through Alanya’s solid defense throughout the match as that was all theat occurred on the scoreboard. Metpack Alanya Stars Hokey SK will next face SLF Mesaicos, while Europa FC Hockey Club prepares to take on HK Zrinjevac.

Game 6 SLF Mesaicos v HK Zrinjevac 0-7

Croatia’s HK Zrinjevac overwhelmed SLF Mesaicos with a big 7-0 victory, bouncing back from their opening day loss.

The onslaught began early with Pia Callmer scoring the opening field goal just a minute into the game. Zrinjevac’s momentum continued unabated, with Callmer adding two more to her tally, including a penalty stroke. Additional goals from Lotta Platen and Jasna Bužančić further solidified their lead, with the team executing flawlessly both offensively and defensively throughout the match.

The Croats sit in third spot, a point behind Europa and so they need a result and a favour from the other game to help their cause.

Game 7 Grupo Desportivo do Viso v HC Luxembourg 0-1

In Pool B, Luxembourg narrowly defeated Grupo Desportivo do Viso with a last-quarter goal, securing a 1-0 victory, guaranteeing them a place in the final – another famous first for the club.

The game remained scoreless for the majority, with both teams displaying solid defensive structures. It wasn’t until the 50th minute that HC Luxembourg went ahead via Friday’s hero Aine Healy, who found the net with a decisive field goal, marking the game’s only score. It means Luxembourg will go for a first ever women’s European medal on Monday, no matter what happens on Sunday.

Game 8 Porvoo HC v KS Hokej Start Brzeziny 0-9

Capping off the day KS Hokej Start Brzeziny delivered an overwhelming 9-0 victory over Porvoo HC.

Brzeziny dominated from the start with goals from Kinga Owczarek and Paula Sławińska in the first quarter. They extended their lead with further goals from Dziyana Varanovich, Oliwia Krychnia, and Magdalena Pabiniak. Brzeziny’s relentless attack continued in the second half, adding four more goals, including a final penalty corner by Monika Polewczak in the 60th minute. It means they are also through to a final on Monday, no matter how they do against Luxembourg on Sunday.
