Student sides shine on opening day in Alanya in women’s Trophy II as Gaziantep produce remarkable comeback

Ireland’s UCD and Scotland’s Edinburgh University both picked up wins to lead the way in Pool A at the EuroHockey Trophy II Women in Alanya with Cambrai and Gaziantep Polisgücü landing 3-2 wins in Pool B.

For Gaziantep, they scored three times in the last five minutes to overturn AHTC Wien in an amazing comeback.

Game 1 HC 1972 Rakovník v UCD Ladies HC 0-4

In the opening clash of Pool A UCD Ladies HC dominated HC 1972 Rakovník with a convincing 4-0 victory. UCD’s controlled performance saw them gradually build their lead, scoring once in the first and then solidifying their win with three more goals in the second half.

UCD’s scoring was methodically spread out, starting with Mikayla Power’s field goal in the 11th minute, followed by Florence Maughan in the 35th minute, Katherine Egan in the 57th, and Leah O’Shea sealing the deal in the final minute of the match.

Game 2 Edinburgh University HC v Swansea HC 1-0

In an intensely contested match, Edinburgh University HC narrowly defeated Swansea HC 1-0. This result strengthens Edinburgh’s position within the pool, aligning them with the top contenders early in the tournament.

Edinburgh took an early lead with Ava Smith scoring a decisive field goal in the 14th minute. Despite multiple attempts from both sides, this goal remained the match’s sole score, with Edinburgh maintaining tight defensive control to secure their lead through to the final whistle.

Game 3 Cambrai HC v Šiauliai Ginstrektė-Akademija 3-2

In an engaging Pool B encounter, Cambrai HC edged out Šiauliai Ginstrektė-Akademija with a close 3-2 victory.

The game kicked off with Cambrai taking the lead early through a penalty corner by Agustina Arista, but Šiauliai quickly responded with a field goal by Danielė Laurinavičiūtė. Cambrai regained and extended their lead with goals from Paloma Alessi and Maria Antonioni, only for Šiauliai to narrow the gap once more with a penalty corner by Dovilė Kuklienė, making sure they got a losing bonus point.

Game 4 Gaziantep Polisgücü SK v AHTC Wien 3-2

Gaziantep Polisgücü SK fought back from 2-0 down to brilliantly win their opening match. AHTC Wien built a first half lead thanks to a penalty corner by Maria-Luisa Esser in the 24th minute and went 2-0 up with a field goal from Hannah Szladits early in the third quarter.

Gaziantep mounted a remarkable comeback in the final five minutes; Fatma Songul Gültekin scored in the 55th minute, followed by Nur Baran’s equaliser in the 59th minute and there was still time for Perihan Çınar to net the winning goal in the last minute, sealing a 3-2 victory for Gaziantep.

Gaziantep will next face Cambrai HC, while AHTC Wien looks to recover against Šiauliai Ginstrektė-Akademija.
