Türkiye, Italy, Croatia and Switzerland keep alive Championship II hopes

Wins for Türkiye and Italy in Dublin and Croatia and Switzerland in Vienna means all four nations have a chance of qualifying on Sunday for EuroHockey Championship II in 2025.

Ivan Šoić’s first half double helped inspire Croatia to a strong 4-1 win over Lithuania, giving them a chance at qualifying for next year’s Championship II.

He netted either side of a Josip Krleža goal in the first half to build a 3-0 lead and while Povilas Sinkevičius pulled one back in the third quarter, Hrvoje Gavran made the result extra safe.

They will play Switzerland in the fifth-sixth place playoff after they bounced back from their shoot-out defeat with a double-figures win over Hungary. Loris Grandchamp scored six times in the 13-0 win.

Men’s EuroHockey Championship Qualifier B (Dublin, Ireland)

Türkiye got their first win of the weekend when they outdid Luxembourg 4-1 as they eventually broke down their opponents defences.

Furkan Ataş opened the scoring in the eighth minute when his baseline cross took a deflection in off a defender. It remained that way until the third quarter after Türkiye missed a penalty stroke in Q2.

Omer Karakus put daylight between the two teams with two goals in quick succession, popping the first one through his legs for 2-0. Luxembourg missed a stroke to cut the gap and they were punished by Karakus’s second with a 44th minute deflection.

Batuhan Özakalin added the fourth before Alexis Desloveere got one back with two minutes to go, Luxembourg’s first ever international goal.

In the day’s closing game, Italy were too strong for Malta as their penalty corner machine hit full throttle. Geronimo Clement scored four times from set plays while Luca Valentino (one corner, one stroke) also weighed in to put them out of reach.
