Türkiye looking to learn lessons from Hamburg for Berlin challenge

Türkiye will hope they can build on the lessons learned in Hamburg in 2022 when they produced strong periods of play but ultimately ended in sixth place in their debut women’s EuroHockey Indoor Championship.

This time around, they have seven returnees and five moving up from the Under-21 line-up to make their international debuts.

Perihan Çinar will captain the side once again having been the midfield controller for much of the last edition. She was also the top scorer at the EuroHockey 5s championship last summer, showing her eye for goal.

Their other big source of goals is Fatma Songül Gültekin who scored an incredible 77 goals during the Turkish indoor season for Gaziantep Polisgücü. Her ability on the counter is another key facet to how they play.

They are joined by an exciting new generation of players who finished in third place in the 2023 Under-21 Euros. Merve Aslan played a full role in Hamburg before being a defensive rock for the Under-21s in Lucerne.

Sude Nur Kurt, 17-year-old Sila Erkoç and goalkeeper Arzu Öztürk are among the others making the big step up.

And there is a growing sense of confidence in Türkiye as they get more frequent exposure to the senior international stage with their men’s team earning promotion last weekend.

The challenge is now to learn how to see out matches; in 2022, they led Ukraine 6-2, were level with the Netherlands until the last minute and 2-1 up on Czechia but ended up without a result in each case by a single goal.

As such, they will be looking to land their first top division result this week.
