Finland launches bold new strategy: A Shared Spirit, A Game for Everyone

The Finnish Hockey Association is the latest national association to launch its bold new strategy document as part of the EuroHockey Solidarity through Great Governance project, supported by the EU.

The 2025-2034 Strategy: A Shared Spirit, A Game for Everyone aims to expand participation, enhance club development, and elevate national team performance, all underpinned by strong governance and inclusivity.

The Finnish Hockey Association’s new strategy focuses on three key areas:

1.    Junior Development – Expanding youth programs to build a sustainable pipeline of players and fostering a lifelong connection to the sport.

2.    Club Growth & Collaboration – Strengthening field hockey clubs as the backbone of the sport, ensuring sustainable and well-managed operations.

3.    National Teams & Performance – Enhancing training, visibility, and support for Finland’s national teams, solidifying their presence on the international stage.

Enabling these pillars are core investments in marketing, workforce development, and infrastructure.

Currently, Finnish field hockey remains a niche spor with the new strategy aiming to significantly expand this base, introducing structured school programmes, increased access to facilities, and enhanced pathways for player development.

“This strategy is not just about competition—it’s about making field hockey accessible to everyone, from grassroots players to elite athletes,” said Suomen Hockeyliitto President Jarmo Ruohenen.

“With the support of EuroHockey, we are building a future where hockey in Finland thrives as an inclusive and dynamic community sport.”

EuroHockey board member and chair of the development committee Peter Elders was present at the launch and said: “It was very worthwhile to travel to Finland to help FHA on their road to new networks with strong and interested parties in both the NOC and the Ministry.

“I am convinced that, in the long run, this will benefit the great volunteers of FHA to grow hockey in this lovely country.”

It is the latest federation to launch their new strategy as part of the EuroHockey programme following the likes of Croatia, Türkiye and Portugal.
