Five-star Ireland bounce back in style against Scots

Ireland bounced back from their opening day defeat to record a big 5-0 win over Scotland and ignite their chances of reaching the semi-finals.

After a first quarter punctuated by plenty of penalty corners, the Green Army came to life in Q2. Hannah McLoughlin put them in front with a close range flick after she wrestled the ball off the last defender.

With 80 seconds, Ellen Curran slotted home after a baseline run from Michelle Carey and it was 3-0 with Niamh Carey scoring with a pin-point following a pitch-length move, exchanging passes with her twin sister Michelle along the way.

Sarah Torrans cashed in for the fourth in closing stages after earlier shots from Charlotte Beggs and Katie Mullan had been half-blocked. Torrans then added another when Deirdre Duke picked her out beyond the last defender.

Ellen Curran said her side were “just delighted to put in a performance, to come out just 24 hours after [a tough loss] and put in a show like that, we are buzzing!

“Very different feelings; yesterday we were so deflated initially after the match [against England] and hoped we would have put up a better fight so to get five brilliant goals today and keep a clean sheet, we are thrilled.

“There’s three of us on three points now and then we play Germany in a couple of days so we will rest up, prepare as well as we can and then give it our best.”
